This seems to be an issue with SMF as stated.

In SMF 1.1.8, the online users are generated into $context['list_users_online'], which is a bool array() that is propogated from these arrays:

$context['num_guests']
$context['num_buddies']
$context['num_users_hidden']

In which are loaded using count() to generate each array entry:

$context['num_users_online'] = count($context['users_online']) + $context['num_users_hidden'];

If you're using a modification that attributes spider count (as default SMF 1.1.x does not contain this feature by default), make certain that, whatever variable it adds, is being added into $context['num_users_online'] in BoardIndex.php.

Likewise, the Users Online Today feature is defined briefly as $total_users;

$total_users = $context['num_guests'] + $context['num_users_online'];

That being, if you want spider count to increase the total users online count, edit that line in addition to the one previous.

Side note - As far as I'm aware, SMF does not count the same user from the same IP more than once for guests. That way, if a swarm of 69 bots attacked your site all using the IP 69.99.99.99, the guest count would be 69, but it would increase the total online by 1.

Some are fine. I see an agent called Statictheplanet at least 10 times a day, every day. It used to bother me, I used to place server bans.. but unless they really start hammering the site and use up more server resources.. I'll leave em be.


I don't think you are seeing half that information from Who's Online by default. Guests are often the concern, the unknown bots.
